Southern Hemispheric Biomass Burning as Seen by Mipas: C2h6 and Ozone

چکیده
The Michelson Interferometer for Passive Atmospheric Sounding (MIPAS) provides spectrally resolved limb radiance measurements from the upper troposphere to the mesosphere. Under cloud free conditions, these spectral radiances are used to retrieve global distributions of mixing ratios of atmospheric trace species down to the upper troposphere. From 21 October to 14 November 2003, MIPAS observed enhanced amounts of upper tropospheric C2H6 and ozone. By means of trajectory calculations, the enhancements observed in the Southern hemisphere are attributed to a biomass burning plume, which covered wide parts of the Southern hemisphere. It extended from South America to the Southern Atlantic ocean, Africa, the Indian Ocean and Australia. The chemical composition of the plume varied with the source region. African savanna fires led to a higher ozone/ethane ratio than South American rainforest burning.

MIPAS measurements of upper tropospheric C 2 H 6 and O 3 during the southern hemispheric biomass burning season in 2003
Under cloud free conditions, the Michelson Interferometer for Passive Atmospheric Sounding (MIPAS) provides measurements of spectrally resolved limb radiances down to the upper troposphere. These are used to infer global distributions of mixing ratios of atmospheric constituents in the upper troposphere and the stratosphere. From 21 October to 12 November 2003, MIPAS observed enhanced amounts o...

متن کاملSeasonal and interannual variations in HCN amounts in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere observed by MIPAS
We present a HCN climatology of the years 2002– 2012, derived from FTIR limb emission spectra measured with the Michelson Interferometer for Passive Atmospheric Sounding (MIPAS) on the ENVISAT satellite, with the main focus on biomass burning signatures in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere. HCN is an almost unambiguous tracer of biomass burning with a tropospheric lifetime of 5–6 mon...
متن کاملGlobal Peroxyacetyl Nitrate (pan) Retrieval in the Upper Troposphere from Limb Emission Spectra of the Michelson Interferometer for Passive Atmospheric Sounding (mipas)
Limb emission spectra of the Michelson Interferometer for Passive Atmospheric Sounding (MIPAS) onboard the ENVIronmental SATellite (ENVISAT) are used to derive the first global distribution of peroxyacetyl nitrate (PAN) in the upper troposphere. PAN is generated in polluted tropospheric air masses and acts as a carrier of NO in the cold upper troposphere. The analysed dataset covers the period ...
متن کاملComparison of scan-angle method and convective cloud differential method in retrieving tropospheric ozone from TOMS.
Tropospheric ozone, derived from the Scan-Angle Method (SAM) and the Convective Cloud Differential (CCD) method, exhibits a noticeable abundance over the South Atlantic, where it is associated with biomass-burning in the austral spring. This feature is also seen in the distribution of carbon monoxide observed from Measurements Of Pollution In The Troposphere (MOPITT). In the boreal burning seas...
